A big year for Broadway: New shows and student favorites

Dec 8, 2017

Travel Notes

New York City is one of our top destinations for a reason. There’s no end to the sights, sounds and experiences student travelers have at their fingertips. And one of those must-have experiences is the spectacle of a Broadway show. The upcoming spring season means brand new shows your students will love – though some of our tried and true favorites are still delighting audiences. So whether you’re anxious to catch the latest hit or love the classics, there’s a show for everyone!

Hollywood meets Broadway

Of the newest shows and upcoming spring premieres, quite a few made a splash on the silver screen before coming to Broadway. Incredible production quality and familiar storylines will make these new shows instant student hits.

SpongeBob Squarepants

SpongeBob is relocating his pineapple from under the sea to the Great White way. An aquarium-themed set, over the top costumes and songs from hit makers John Legend, Cyndi Lauper and Steven Tyler (to name a few!), this Nickelodeon musical is already making a splash.

Frozen

Following the global success of the film, Disney’s Frozen opens on Broadway in February 2018. Anna, Elsa, Olaf and friends will take the snow-covered stage with an expanded story, new songs and a huge ensemble cast. Tickets are already in high demand, so you’ll want to book this show as soon as possible.

Mean Girls

Tina Fey takes on Broadway with her comedy about high school queen bees and wannabes. After an initial run at The National Theatre in D.C., Mean Girls debuts on Broadway in March 2018.

Classic Broadway revivals

Iconic musicals always make their way back to the theatre, with this year marking the return of two much-loved classics.

Carousel

Of all the musicals they created together, Carousel is remembered as Rodgers and Hammerstein’s favorite. Performed by a cast that features multiple Tony winners and nominees, the show opens in April 2018.

My Fair Lady

One of the most loved and longest running shows in American theatre, the timeless story of My Fair Lady returns to the Broadway stage in March 2018 for the first time in 25 years.

Tried and true student favorites

Of the hundreds of student groups we host in New York City each year, some groups want the hottest ticket in town (we’re looking at you, Hamilton), while others choose a BRT-tested, student-approved crowd pleaser. Here are some of our personal favorites that will have students singing all the way home:

Aladdin

Anastasia

The Lion King

Wicked

Phantom of the Opera

The best thing about Broadway (and Off Broadway!) is the terrific variety of shows and performances. Your students may prefer a play, concert or special event rather than a musical – all of those are options when we partner with you to plan an incredible student travel experience.
