Meet a Tour Director: Dee George
Travel Notes
BRT’s tour directors are some of the most interesting people you’ll meet, and they love sharing their favorite cities with students from across the country. Recently, we sat down with Orlando based tour director Dee George to learn her story, what she loves most about her job, and some hidden gems in her favorite destination.
What led you to become a tour director?
As a retail business owner in the 80’s, I had the privilege of going on business incentive trips all over the world. There was always someone on the trip from the travel company doing the “behind the scenes” work. I put it in the back of my mind for “later” as my dream job once I finished my “mom” job.
What is your favorite part about Orlando?
All the entertainment! What a fabulous tourist destination! With the Walt Disney World® Resort, Universal Orlando® Resort, and SeaWorld theme parks, unlimited dining opportunities including a variety of dinner shows, and shopping at the outlet malls, there is something for everyone. The Florida winter weather is beautiful with plenty of sunshine and beautiful beaches lining the coastline on both sides.
Tell us about a “hidden gem” or something most people don’t know about Orlando.
There are many suburban towns/cities that surround Orlando with old town charm. Winter Garden, Sanford, Winter Park, Kissimmee and Mount Dora are some of my favorites. When you get tired of the major attractions, the nearby town of Celebration is a great place to recharge, with its beautiful lake a quaint sidewalk restaurants.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Being a part of the excitement for the students. Watching them make “memories of a lifetime” at the Walt Disney World® Resort with their performances. They truly feel they are in the “Most Magical Place on Earth”. The personal rewards of making new friends with the directors, teachers and chaperones from all over the country, some that I am blessed to work with several times over many years.
What has one of your favorite moments been as a tour director?
There are so many. This has been one of the best experiences of my life. I have met so many wonderful people along the way, and I feel very blessed to have this opportunity. I love every minute I have the opportunity to see the students have such a wonderful experience.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love the outdoors, just being a part of nature. The warm weather of Florida allows year round outdoor pleasure whether it is riding my bike on one the many trails, enjoying a dip in the ocean/gulf or dining outdoors. I am addicted to fitness and health. You may find me walking laps around the lagoon at Epcot® while the students are participating in a workshop. I must stay healthy as I plan on tour directing for many years to come!
Dee George graduated from the International Tour Management Institute (ITMI) in December 2000 and is completing her 14th season as a professional tour director. Dee lives in Clearwater, Florida with her husband, Lance.
