Artist, world traveler, planner extraordinaire, for Kelly life begins when you are pushed beyond your comfort zone. In her role at BRT, she focuses on international itineraries and says that she couldn’t possibly pick a favorite. Considering she’s lived all over the world (Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Taiwan, and Kenya to be exact), how could she choose? Armed with a degree in studio art and a minor in art history, Kelly has used her art (sculpting) to explore new places and meet amazing people the world over. She loves how art builds bridges between cultures and creates horizon-expanding dialogue.
My favorite travel memory
I have been to so many interesting places so far and it has been quite an adventure! One trip that does stand out, though, was to Cambodia several years ago. The Temple of Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and the Bayon Temple were breathtakingly beautiful with their sculptural decorations and sheer size. Angkor Wat is still inhabited by an ancient village and monks walk about in their vibrant, orange robes. There is a small school for orphans that is run by the monks and we were fortunate to be there when they were taking a music lesson on top of a hill, overlooking the temple, at sunset. It gave me chills.
My hobbies and pastimes
I enjoy the physical exertion and rhythm of a hammer and chisel that comes with creating a sculpture out of stone or plaster. I welcome the challenge of creating something out of nothing and exploring different materials and techniques, including hand building sculptures out of clay. I donate most of my work to raise money for local charities.
My favorite travel destination
I lived in Nairobi, Kenya for three years and traveled around the country. It is so full of life that you can almost feel the surge of energy pulsing through your veins. Kenya is more than just safaris. It has beautiful beaches, a rich, diverse culture, and the weather is beautiful year round. There are so many incredible places to see in Kenya that a lifetime wouldn’t be enough to check them all off my list.
