A Symbol of Friendship
The National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates the gift of 3,000 cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo to the city of Washington, D.C., in 1912. The festival as we know it today has roots going back to 1927. It honors the lasting friendship between the United States and Japan, welcoming 1.6 million visitors each year, thousands of whom attend the parade.
