Travel Notes

Travel insurance is the cause of much confusion and the root of many questions from group leaders and parents. Although travel insurance does carry an additional cost, the benefits and peace-of-mind insurance offers are well worth the investment. We have compiled a list of the most common questions we receive regarding trip insurance, to help your students’ families decide if it is right for them.

Why should I purchase Travel Insurance?

As the adage goes, insurance is something you don’t think you need…until after you need it. Many travelers do not realize that the right coverage can protect your investment before your trip, as well as while you are on tour. If you or your relatives have long term or recurring illness, frequently changing schedules, uncertain trip eligibility, or other unpredictable factors which may affect your ability to travel, purchasing coverage which includes the option to “cancel for any reason” is an ideal way to protect your investment and recover a large portion of your trip payments if you do need to cancel in the days and weeks prior to your tour. This is the primary reason that our travelers choose to purchase travel insurance.

What does Travel Insurance cover?

Coverage varies greatly depending on your provider and the coverage you select. The coverage BRT recommends through Travel Insured will refund 100% of the trip cost when cancelling for a covered reason such as an illness or a death in the family. The recommended coverage also allows you to “cancel for any reason” up to 48 hours prior to departure and receive up to 75% of your trip’s cost. Most policies, including BRT’s recommended coverage, also include coverage for other trip-related issues such as medical and lost luggage expenses. Be sure to check the details of your specific policy to understand what is and isn’t covered. While BRT’s recommended coverage works well for most of our travelers, each traveler is free to purchase coverage from the provider of their choosing.

How much does Travel Insurance cost?

The cost of travel insurance varies by provider, amount of coverage and the cost of the trip. A traveler purchasing BRT’s recommended coverage through Travel Insured can expect to pay $35-55 for an average domestic tour, but your cost may vary. Visit our Parents & Students page and click on the Travel Insured logo to receive an exact quote for your individual situation.

When should I purchase Travel Insurance?

We recommend purchasing travel insurance within two weeks after making your first trip payment, but not before. Purchasing well before your trip’s departure date ensures that you receive the maximum benefit from your plan if an issue arises.

What happens if I don’t purchase Travel Insurance and need to cancel?

Cancellation penalties will vary based on the features and inclusions of your specific trip.

Where do I purchase Travel Insurance?

Travel insurance is purchased directly through the provider of your choosing. While you are free to purchase coverage from any provider, BRT has arranged a recommended coverage option through Travel Insured which works well for many of our travelers. Your travelers can visit our Parents & Students page and click on the Travel Insured link to purchase coverage directly through Travel Insured.
